Quashing stupid rumors

Bob Brigham, passing on an item from Ohio's "Whistleblower" gossip blog:

When "Mean Jean" Schmidt gets to Washington, what will her first piece of legislation be? According to Whistleblower Research Bureau Chief Fearless Ferrett, word is she's already busy working on her Bloggers Reform Act of 2006, that'll require hosts to be personally criminally liable for all the lies published on their blogsites.

Um. Not true. I just got off the phone with the Congresswoman-elect's office.

Congresswoman-elect Schmidt,

"I have no plans for any legislation at this time, including the legislation mentioned in today's Whistleblower. I am busy hiringg a staff and preparing to be sworn in as a Congresswoman."

I also spoke to Schmidt's campaign manager (and transition coordinator) Joe Braun who said,

"We've never discussed or proposed any type of agenda that would include reforming blogs. We have, by the way, discussed adding a blog to the Congresswoman's website.

It doesn't matter what blogs say about the Congresswoman, she's an advocate for the First Amendment and always has been.

Well, that's that.

Thanks, Bob by jmaier

I was just participating in a thread in the liberal blogosphere suggesting that this was probably just a rumor.  I appreciate the confirmation.

thanks by Bob Brigham

Appreciate you clearing it up. Thanks all!

. . .if the Swing State Project was being ran by people who cared more about acting as honest and effective advocates for their cause rather than playing "gotcha."

hey, be nice by krempasky

Bob emailed me to see if I could check it out. It's not like the Schmidt people return his calls.

I appreciate Mr. Krempasky quickly checking into this. If he heard a rumor of a Democrat trying to clamp down on blogs, I would do my best to get to the bottom of it.

I was lucky enough to have a beer with Mike at a conference and I'm glad we have emailed from time to time since. His leadership on the FEC issue was critical and I did what I could to support him.

I'm also glad he let's me post here and his quick response resulted in an update on SSP as soon as I posted a thank you comment here.

Looks like by tlh lib

you were wrong and Bob was right.
